far from the maddening crowd

or not~~

I thought I might have some news to share this weekend, but I don’t. All I can say is that I made an offer on a house in – of all places – rural Wisconsin. (No, not Tuonela! Drat!) My offer was accepted, but the inspection won’t take place until October 8 – so everything is up in the air right now, and there is no sense in saying much else about it until it happens. I can say it is a place with some really big negatives and some really big positives, so that’s very strange. It’s a space that’s not extremely livable at the moment, so it will be a project. And I know everybody will wonder what happened with moving south. Well, I’d love to live there in the winter, but not sure I’d want to do it year round. And it was just too hard and time consuming to find a place down there from up here. And once I moved into this condo, I realized the most important thing was to simply get out of town and away from people, at least for right now. I moved to the city over seven years ago, and I’ve always had a harder time writing here. Never could get used to all the distractions. So anyway, if this thing goes through I’ll post a few pics and tell everybody about it!

Been spending a lot of time with Wisconsin Death Trip--book and movie--so I'm kinda creeped out about Wisconsin right now.

Ood-gay uck-lay. I don't want to jinx it.

Hope it all works out. Peace and solitude and a quiet place to be creative. Sounds perfect for you.

Wow. I am really excited for you, and anxious to find out more about the property. I love "projects." If I didn't have two squirts, I'd be all about renovating my hizouse.

Wow. Wisconsin, eh? I have a classmate in Wisconsin this semester. That's the sum total of my knowledge of Wisconsin, so eat it up!

We are only a six-hour drive from our projected destination in Florida, and I am going NUTS about how difficult it is to engineer the move. I am not surprised to hear that it is an even greater barrier for you. And you know, you can be a snowbird from Wisconsin. Not a problem.

I look forward to hearing about this "project," though. That sounds like a distraction in itself, to me...

I's neat to watch you navigate this cross-roads in your life. Thanks for sharing it with us. Can't wait to hear about the new digs.

sandra, thanks! cross your toes too!
i think i'm gonna need it.

patti, wisconsin IS creepy! and the house is creepy. it was actually almost too creepy for me, if that's possible. :D i love wisconsin death trip. i think i told you i stayed at a bed and breakfast where some scenes were filmed. carol, the owner, was the costume designer and had a few bit parts.

stephen, anktay ooyay!

mary louisa, well if this happens, i think this blog might turn into a designer/renovation/restoration blog. :D

bekbek, there's something very comforting in knowing you understand my problem. i was feeling like such a slacker, but finding the perfect spot is almost impossible because of distance.

jaye, navigate? hah! i like that. from my POV it was feeling more like mr. toad's wild ride, so navigate gives me a sense of being in control even though i keep coming upon obstacles.

Not Cassville, I trust, either!

Keep us posted. And other than the fact that I have now lost my reason for visiting Charleston to see you, I'm glad you're sticking around!

Is this one haunted? ;)

Fingers crossed the inspection goes off without a hitch so you can make the fabness public! And very sneaky with the pic...

anne, no, not cassville, but i believe it's on the edge of an equally exciting town. it's northeast of st paul, so farther away from you. but drivable! or is that driveable? hmmm. haven't a clue, but the second now has a red line under it, so i'm assuming i should drop the E.

heather, you know i initially didn't want to get it because it felt very dark to me. couldn't really explain it, but it gave me this sense of overwhelming darkness. so i'll keep you posted on that. could be because nobody has lived in it for years.

angie, teehee!

I think it would be wonderful to have a old home to renovate. Hope it all goes well!

Overwhelming darkness?

If you get it, maybe it will be like establishing a beachhead. You can initially carve out a niche that is yours. Over time, you'll take more and more territory until the dark presence is gone.

And if that doesn't work, try a holy water squirt gun.

Seriously, best of luck with it.

kaycie, thanks! yesterday it seemed like it was all over -- as in wasn't going to happen, but things are looking better today. whew. it's wearing me out.

jason, i really like the idea of holy water in squirt guns. i think i might have to make that a yearly event if i get the place.

I'm just thinking you still need a summer home in Micanopy.

Passed the sign AGAIN and failed to swerve in that direction. Pesky passengers wanting to go home, grrrr.

Oh, and no kidding it's hard! You should DEFINITELY not feel like a slacker. I found a great place a month or so ago, and then we went to see it and/or put some money down... and holy crap, that wasn't a good idea.

It's impossible to "see" a place without being there and seeing the neighborhood. And the possible problems are wide-ranging. (My Mom and Paul bought a house sight-unseen in St. John's, Newfoundland... but it was "downtown" and in St. John's - not a lot of possible errors there.)

bekbek, yeah, online info can be SO deceptive. i'd actually decided not to look at this place because it had some online things i thought could be signs of bigger problems. the real estate agent convinced me to take a look.

micanopy -- you HAVE to go! there's supposed to be a fantastic little gourmet cafe there on main street. i can't remember the name, but people drive from miles around to eat there.
