making the switch

i'm going to make the switch from old blogger to new this week. if anybody has any advice, i'd appreciate it! i'm afraid everything is going to vanish. i have the entire template saved, but it could take several days to get it unmessed up. I noticed that blogger is now saying nothing will change when the switch is made. not sure i'm falling for that.

Pick a simple template, then bring over elements from the old page one at a time, adding sidebar elements separately. I guess the only other thing is adding the image to the top (again, a separate page element).

It does take a bit of time to get your head around it, but once you do, it's actually a lot simpler to maintain.

Umm, does that help?

Yeah, I wouldn't count on NOTHING changing, because Blogger will have to translate your current template to the new style of scripting. But it should be pretty good.

You could always create YET ANOTHER Blogger profile and copy and paste your template into that... If you have to switch your whole account to new Blogger, you can always send your template to one of us and we can try it.

But all in all... if you HAVE to do it... I say jump. It's more fun that way. It is very unlikely to actually erase content. Well, okay, maybe the sidebars...

Am I making you feel any better?

Since I have over 500 posts, I was very nervous about the switch, but Blogger finally made me do it.

Nothing changed at all. It did it all itself! Nothing was lost.

I would suggest creating a new Google account to log in. I had one with the name being another email address. Now, I can't change it to something shorter. What a pain in the ass.

I actually didn't have many problems with it. I changed to the new Blogger a while ago, but only recently changed to the new layout last week. It reordered some of my side links, but I didn't lose any.

However, since I'm paranoid, I went into my template before moving things over and copied all of the HTML of the links I had on my sidebar, just in case.

The new page elements are pretty easy, but I would have rather they made the list element be able to take bulk links, instead of adding one thing at a time. Big pain in the ass.

With my 5 blogs, I was hesitant. But I had a problem commenting on google blogs. At first they wouldn't change over big blogs, but I guess they made changes.

My design templates never changed. I can still update the same way under the template button by adding and taking away stuff on my sidebar. You just can't recreate an artistic temp with their new layouts and the temps on the web won't work on google.

The things I like about google blogger is I never have to sign in when I go to blogger.com after they have you create a google acct . And you categorize your blog posts, and updates are a lot faster. Probably too much info. haha.

Well, I had originally commented here that I had had no problem switching mine over a couple days ago when forced too. However, just leaving this comment has been a trial b/c it had me sign in to blogger, then to Google, and then it all disappeared...

i did not have much change...but at the time mine was pretty uncomplicated. still have not figured out the stupid sidebars! but i hate that it makes me type in my username and password a couple times (or more!) before it will post comments on other blogs...annoying. i end up just posting as 'other'!

Now that I have a gmail account (which you can get if you have a cell phone... bizarre story... read my blog if you're so curious), things are pretty easy. I have my own personal machine, so I went ahead and told blogger to sign me in automatically. Now, I practically never have to enter my username and password.

Just watch. I'll forget them.

I switched mine over and...

nothing happened.

I truly didn't believe it. I still expect to log in someday and find the Department of Homeland Security waiting for me on my Dashboard.

I have thousands of posts and transferred with nary a problem. Also, my template is complex and didn't cause any difficulty. Jer

Keeping fingers crossed that all goes smoothly.

i took bekbek's suggestion of putting the old template on a competely new blog. it wouldn't accept it, so i'll make the switch soon and just see what happens. since my whole blog is customized, i'm thinking it could be pretty screwy. but maybe not. anyway, thanks for all the feedback! i'm actually tired of the header anyway, so if that vanishes i'm not sure i'll miss it.

If you need any help, just let me know. Seriously. (Why do I keep using that word in your comments? I guess because I'm such a smartass that I never think anyone will take me seriously. So never mind, answered my own question, I'll just go stand over there now.)

woot! i'm on new blogger.

Yay! Now I don't have to log in separately to comment on your blog! Woo, look at me, brazenly commenting! Aaaahhhhh.... So easy...

Worked that way for me, too, but I haven't tried changing anything in the template yet (and probably won't until I have a spare week to sort things out should I need to).

i think they steamlined the switch process. it used to say that custom templates would be lost; now it says they won't be lost.

since i have at least 5 blogs, i kept imagining a week of work ahead of me after the switch.

i did manage to look at my blog once when i was in florida. used internet explorer, and the blog was really messed up. so i wonder how many people are seeing it that way? and if most people are seeing it with holes and gaps and a header that doesn't fill the page, maybe i shouldn't have worried about screwing it up with a switch.

How do you get all those smoking babies to inhale at the same time? Reminds me of the Rockettes somehow. Hope the conversion is successful.

I was thinking the same thing with the row of smoking babies, it's kinda cool! haha!
