dog parks
Some of you already met Harry, the incredible barfing dog. Two minutes in a car and Harry is throwing up. This was taken a few days ago at the Minnehaha Falls dog park in Minneapolis. The park is beautiful and amazing, bordered on one side by the Mississippi River where Harry's just been for a swim. He actually expected to be able to walk on water, and was a little traumatized when that didn't happen. I used to think dog parks were ridiculous. i was so wrong. they're wonderful, especially if you have a hyper dog.

What a sweet-looking fella Harry is. Sorry to hear about the walking on water thing, Harry, but swimming has its charms too!
Oh my gosh! That place is awesome. And it's for dogs? I never even knew about dog parks. Lucky Harry! =D
bill, yeah we would have really been popular if he'd been able to carry that off. ;) i hope he finally gets the hang of swimming.
kelly, the park is actually downstream just a little from the falls, and is next to a people park. :D it's amazing. you hike in through beautiful, shady woodland. it takes about 15 minutes to get to the river and the off-leash area. i have no idea how many acres it covers, but it's all lush woodland and river. i kept saying this is where i want to live. this is what i'm looking for. :D i doubt the city would allow that though. now in canada they can't stop people from living on public ground.
Our dogs have never been swimming.
Of course, if our dogs get off-leash, they think they should be hitched to a sled galloping across frozen fields. If they get loose here, they go onto farms and chase horses.
How did I miss Harry?
anne, that's because i'm more like harry's grandma. he comes to visit, we do fun things, then he usually goes home.
he's a sweet little weirdo.
sandra, that won't make you popular with the neighbors. :D
Back in Toronto, I had friends who took their dogs to the dog park every week. The park wasn't nearly as nice as the one you found, but it was an important gathering place! The dogs met up with regular dog friends... and the humans made human friends at the same time. On the one hand, quite strange, and on the other, quite civilized.
bekbek: i was surprised to find how well-behaved most dogs are when they're off-leash. i was also surprised to find that harry has excellent social skills. he should really write a book.
