foreign sales

just got the polish copy of play dead. i think i posted the red cover of before i wake about a year ago.

foreign sales are nothing like selling the original manuscript. Normally the contract simply arrives in the mail. i sign it, get a check 6- 12 months later, followed by books 6 - 24 months after that. I never have any contact with the publishing house, and there is such a delay to everything that I usually forget about the sale until the check and books arrive. it's never a lot of money, and once two agents take a cut it's even less. but foreign sales are always a nice, welcome surprise.

How cool! I'd be so excited I'd be doing a Happy Dance, even fully-clothed. Really. Thanks for sharing this. And ha ha I'm first.

Those as some nice covers. Simple, yet striking.

Wow. That is a long time. That came out, what, 2004? Now if you can just break that Tagalog market in the Philippines, you're set.

So, how's your Polish Anne? Do you ever flip the books open and try to make sense of any of it?

I like the covers.

hulles, thanks. it's a bit strange, but very nice. speak polish? you can have a copy.

emeraldcite, i agree about the covers. it used to be many of the foreign covers were...well, kind of tacky. but it's not that way anymore. i really like the top cover. it's obvious most aren't as expensive as american covers, but i don't think that matters. they still look and feel very nice.

stephen, this is actually fast in comparison to many foreign houses!

sandra, i don't know a word of polish. i don't even know what the title is. the first word is similar to play, but the second didn't show up in any translation sites.

if any of you know someone who would like a free copy, let me know.

Great news, Anne. Stylish covers, too. And I love that backwards language!

I like the covers too. The titles are fascinating to stare at and try to get a sense of the sound. I'm sure I have no clue what the actual pronunciation is, but it's fun to noodle with, especially know the English translation.

Plus, they look like booger, er, Blogger word verifications!

That is really cool! I think there just must be something infinitely cool about having your own work sold in another language and everything -assuming, of course, the story even vaguely resembles the one you wrote in English.

Grats and all. :)

i just got a german contract for hush -- and if i did the conversion right it's actually some decent money. WOOT!

merry christmas to me!!!

ahem. must settle down.

Awesome! And a german one to boot! That's great Anne! Congrats. Love the covers. Don't you love those little suprises?

Hulles said...

Congratulations on the German contract! Big WOOT, whatever the hell that is. And why settle down? If you can't exult here in your own blog, where can you exult? Seriously, good work. And I'd love a copy of your book in Polish, seriously.

That's a nasty stutter that bill cameron has, poor thing.

I've been having trouble with mean ol' Blogger all week. I wonder how many times this one will appear!

(Congrats, Anne!)

anne frasier said...

thanks for alla the congrats. :)

heh. i like that typo. alla the

hulles, do you mean seriously about the polish or bill's stutter?

if you're talking about the book, i'll brace myself and bring it by nina's sometime. but i have a big fear of stepping inside nina's because it has no transitional zone. step in the door and you're there. "what can i get ya?" whoa. wait a minute. i was just outside and now i'm inside. give me a moment. and why are people staring? every place should have a transitional zone. but i'll bet i can do it.

bill, blogger is being a giant pain again. i'm still having trouble leaving comments.

Those are cool covers! The designs are simple, yet the broken glass and silhouette of a woman give an impact.

I meant seriously about the book. The second post was just making fun of my overusing 'seriously' in the first post. But yeah, I'd love a copy, seriously, so stop by, but let me know first so I can have my nails done. For a transitional zone, go downstairs to the bookstore first then come up the stairs right by the front of the store. I also bet you can do it.

COOL!

bill, i'll seriously try to do it.
