through a lens weirdly

i decided to go to wisconsin to take photos for the somewhat dead Pale Immortal blog. I was after some stills of the locations and images used in the video, but I got sidetracked. My daughter came along. She was always extremely cooperative when it came to photographs. Today I started taking some shots of the mausoleum used in the video. She suddenly appeared in the very corner of the frame. And that gave me an idea that had nothing to do with our reason for being in wisconsin. i got about 100 images, some pretty damn nice. maybe one or two i can use on my other blog. :D

These are awesome pics. I love the action ones - your daughter must be very, very patient - but especially love the first image. Something about the intimation of the human along with the deal looking flower/plants on the door is just really cool.

Oops, I meant "dead looking" not "deal." That's what happens when my thoughts go faster than my fingers!

Excellent shots. Nicely done.

angie and stephen: thanks. :)

angie, i don't know about patience. ham -- yes. ;)

Some great pics.

thanks, emeraldcite. i wish the blurry areas were a little more visible, but i lost some of that detail when i web optimized them.

The first is my favorite. The detail is nice, even if you've lost some when moving them to the web.

Nothing like dancing on someone's grave to make a nice family trip, eh? ;)

For action, uniqueness, and just a bizarre interaction of images, I like the last one.

The first one is cool too. :D

Can't wait to see more.

While I appreciate the adventurous agility of your lovely duaghter, I am stunned by the cemetary!. I've never seen anything like that outside of film before. Wonderful.

Oops, my Mr just told me he is gonna take me to one like this. All thanks to you, Anne. Great post!

emeraldcite: a nice family outing -- that's what i was thinking at the time. :D

the air was super dry, so it made really dark, deep shadows. i love that kind of light.

jason: i was a little concerned that the images might offend people, but i've always liked to combine totally unrelated moods/themes. your mind somehow makes them work to tell a story.

you can't see it in this small image, but her shirt says youth down the side. just another great accident.

flood: i was used to the elaborate, amazing cemeteries we had in iowa. when i moved to the twin cities i had trouble finding anything like that -- which i always thought was strange. maybe it's the cost of a cemetery plot in the city. there's only one cemetery i can think of in minneapolis that might have something interesting. hmm. i might go there tomorrow!

Damn! Those are nice photos!

The first one is a interesting perspective, but it's not obvious that it's a mausoleum door. The second one, of the beautiful, vibrant young lady literally dancing on a grave is oddly joyful.

I like the last one best. She is kind of in shadow, yet the mausoleum and sky are clear and bright. The composition is stunning too, with her body forming a triangle that is set against the triangle of the structure. Nice job!

anne frasier said...

thanks, jaye! you're so right about the lighting and contrast. the sun must have been behind clouds for the other two photos. and i hadn't noticed the repeated triangle!

I think she's cute ;)

You've probably been asked this before, but do you use a digital camera? I still like my film camera; it has more depth and focus. But our artist friend pointed out to me that the film camera is "better" (more expesive) than the digital, and if I put the money into a better digital it would do the same things.

It's been harder for me to break away from a film camera than it was from vinyl to Compact Disc! :)

emeraldcite: :) the outfit really added to the image. that weird white skirt and boots. jeans wouldn't have been the same.

should i mention that the cat peed in those boots a few days ago? nah.

highlander, i broke down and got a cheap digital camera a little over a year ago. it's total crap. i think it was about 100 bucks. that's what these were taken with -- which proves that sometimes it can surprise you when the light is good.

(I have a sweet little pentax SLR i've had for twenty years.)

i find it SO frustrating because i have no control over anything that's happening, and it's so slow. i had to hit the shutter before she left the ground. but it has fantastic depth of field. really amazing. and the lens isn't the viewfinder. I HATE that!!!

but then there's a weird thing that happens because i have no control -- i am really surprised when things turn out. like these. i took some in another cemetery, and along the st. croix river, downtown hudson... i was happy with almost all of them. then some days everything is crap.

the light was perfect.

it really makes me want to get a good digital because i can just imagine how great that would be. and it's so nice to just click away without worrying about film. you would like that i think. it's really liberating. you can experiment with different angles and shots. but i never print them out! but i do try to get them on a cd right away.

Those are great shots!! I love the first one, and number 2 is a especially nice action shot. Photography was a great hobby of mine in high school, and when I first got married I went crazy with my digital cam. Now I have time for nothing else with my writing, but reading. *sigh*

anne frasier said...

kelly, you might get back into it at some point in the future. i didn't pick up my camera for years, and now i'm really getting into it again. my renewed interest started with a darkroom class i took a few years ago.

Cemetery Ballet! I've heard about it for years, but never actually seen it until now.

Great photos, Anne. :)
