on the stereo

AFTER THE GOLD RUSH
NEIL YOUNG

"Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning..."

DON'T LET IT BRING YOU DOWN

THE WATERBOYS

"I wish I was a fisherman
tumblin' on the seas
far away from dry land
and its bitter memories
castin' out my sweet line
with abandonment and love
no ceiling bearin' down on me
save the starry sky above"

FISHERMAN'S BLUES

Oh. My God. I LOVE The Waterboys. I listened to that album/cd over and over again. One of my all time favorites.

angie, we really have similar taste in music. :) that's a great album. i saw the waterboys at first avenue in minneapolis several years ago. that was my last time at first ave. i enjoyed the show, but i do remember thinking, "I'm getting too old for this shit." the cement floor almost killed me. i think i hobbled out of there when the show was over. :D

I had to listen to the album again today.

I completely understand the "I'm too old for this shit" feeling. I saw a lot of bands when I lived in Chicago - Ian McCullough just about killed me (and I wasn't that damn old). The fucker kept us waiting for over an hour at Cabaret Metro. We hadn't gotten there early enough to get seats so my feet were completely numb by the end of the night. At least he put on a kick ass show (even if he was falling down - couldn't decide if he was sick or just really, really fucked up).

I'm pretty sure I still have a copy of "After the Gold Rush" somewhere in the basement. It's sealed up in one of those huge water-proof tupperware box things. A fine album!

I remember you and I discussing an appearance by Neil Young on SNL a few months ago.

GEEZERS UNITE! :)

I've never listened to The Waterboys but those lyrics were making me queasy. I get seasick.

angie: i think the longest i waited to see somebody was several hours for frank black. i think they got lost on the road or something. but we could at least leave and return. still i was ready to go home before he even started.

jeff: i remember that geezer discussion. :D

sandra, there's always dramamine. :D

The Waterboys - were/are one of my faves, from their album THIS IS THE SEA and of course FISHERMAN'S BLUES which came out when I got married in Ireland many years ago. I reminds me of when i danced with my wife for the first time [when we were married], prior to that Sam Cook's HIGHER AND HIGHER was the first song we danced to.

What happens then is life gets in the way, and life gets more complex.

Thanks for reminding me about 'Light in in head....' lyric

ali, you obviously had a much cooler wedding than mine. :D and it's so true that life gets more complex and lovely things are forgotten. sometimes we have to stop and smell the albums. :D

Cheers Anne,

Yes life does get in the way - but being reminded about a peice of music does bring back memories, when I was more care-free, and the world was not filled with such media manipulation and misdirections, and responsibilities of bringing up a family etc -

It was good to see that you like similar music, made me smile
