reverse speech -- voices from the unconscious

i've always gotten a kick out of reverse speech. seems like most of them deal with satan and are a real stretch, but this one is pretty good.

"the most controversial backward messages on the song can be found in the following soundtrack. They say backwards: "Its my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad whose power is fake (indeterminate gibberish - some people claim this says, He gives you 666) There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan."

listen here:

stairway to heaven

listen:
the shadow show

some claim it says: Man with the harlot. Girl of evil.

There's also a backmasking message in Another One Bites The Dust. I don't honestly remember what it said, though.

But if I don't listen to people when they talk straight to me, why on earth would anything think I'd listen when they talk backwards to music?

sandra, the mp3 is on the site. here's the scoop on it:

Another One Bites The Dust by Queen. This song is well known is Backmasking circles. It contains two naturally occurring speech reversals that say, "Decide to smoke marijuana," and "Give some acid." However, some people say the reversal says, "Its fun to smoke marijuana."

anne frasier said...

i had to listen to it. :D i can here marijuana near the end of the file. that was about it. i suppose some of the quality is lost since it's an mp3.

Something that not a lot of people know is that if you play recent Presidential speeches backwards you'll hear, "Do crank", "I bend over for Dick" and "You stupid fuckers actually elected me AGAIN". Really. Check it out.

Bill Cameron said...

Stephen, I'm pretty sure he's saying that stuff frontwards too.

Word Verif: updck

No foolin'!

anne frasier said...

stephen: LOL!

bill:

"Word Verif: updck"

:D aw, that's cute. word verication is trying to reverse.

As the wife of a presidential scholar, I must advise you presidents say nothing that specific, interesting or witty.

anne frasier said...

patti: lmao! that's wonderful. :) and i love the new photo.

Some genius in the music industry came up with the idea of backmasking to make all of us burnouts ruin our records by spinning them backwards. Whether or not the messages were actually there, most of us never heard the fucking things, plus we ended up replacing some albums and needles. A work of fucking genius. Crack open another tallboy, dude, and pass me that Iron Maiden record.

angie said...

That was a riot. Although the last version of The Shadow's intro sounded like he said "Girl weevil." That's actually way cooler than girl of evil, imho!

anne frasier said...

patrick, are you revealing more than you really want to?

:D

i remember years ago when people were talking about playing the beatles albums in reverse i wondered how you did that. i guess some turntables actually go both ways. a little off-topic. i remember people would take something sharp and if they disliked a song on an album they'd make a groove across it so the needle would skip that song.

angie, LOL! girl weevil. that would make a good blog title. :D

i love the stairway to heaven line:

There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.

it does sound pretty close to that. it also has a good beat and i can dance to it -- which is SO important when it comes to hidden messages.

My son played one of his RAP songs backwards for me to see if I could hear the hidden message. I told him I couldn't tell the difference. It sounded the same forwards and backwards!

word verification: rapshit

emeraldcite said...

I love reverse speech. It's so demonic...

lol@jeff: is that word verification wishful thinking?

Anonymous said...

jeff: lol! i remember a rap song on the above site that was wet-your-pants funny. i couldn't find it this time. wonder if somebody made them take it down. i can't remember what the reverse was. something very sexual i believe.

emeraldcite: yeah, it sounds really creepy!

i was just thinking that some of the weird speech used in twin peaks was read in reverse, then that was reversed. so forward reverse. :D anyway, it gave it a strange and creepy cadence.

Bill Cameron said...

My dark secret is that I'm a 42—well practically 43—year-old white guy who likes rap music. But I confess, it prolly does sound the same both directions.

Anonymous said...

i really like outkast, but i'm not sure they're rap.

miss jackson -- love that song.

Mindy Tarquini said...

Rap?

Angie told me 'The Lime and the Coconut' isn't Country-Western...therefore, not suitable for Tribe's down home hootenanny.

Do you think 'Unchained Melody' qualifies?

anne frasier said...

m.g.: haha!! 'The Lime and the Coconut'

unchained melody? i don't think it qualifies either!!

Bill Cameron said...

Well, aside from "One" by Faith Hill, "The Lime and the Coconut" is as country as I'm willing to go. And "Unchained Melody"? Motown all the way, baby! Righteous Brothers, yeah!

Bill Cameron said...

P.S. And, yeah, I know they're a couple of white guys. But UC and You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling both have that Motown sound.

If you ask me.

Which no one prolly did.

Just sayin'.

I need a beer.

Mindy Tarquini said...

Are Country and Western two different things? If the song has a cowboy in it, will that count? Is it important what country the song is talking about? Is Ohio western enough? How about Hotel California? I'm from Philly, anything west of the Susquehanna River counts as Western to us, and Lancaster County is plenty country. They use horses and buggies out there.

I found a Fleetwood Mac song sung by the Dixie Chicks...

hmmm...

Mindy Tarquini said...

Motown's Country-Western!?!?!

Well let me just dig out my sequined Diana Ross halter gown, and pull on a pair of elbow length white gloves and I am sooo there. Must be a stray Bunion or two around who can do the backup.

I know I know I know I know!!!

CSNY! They're country, right? I mean, their from this country...

Bill Cameron said...

I just think, "twangy = country/western" and twangy makes me a little squirrelly.

The Eagles were country-rock, which meant that at times, for me, they edged dangerously close to madness. But then, "Hotel California"? Brilliant.

I like the idea of the Dixie Chicks, but can't listen to them. I bought one of their CDs one day though, because some guy in the store was railing about how they were terrorists or traitors or something, so I bought the disc right in front of him. That was pretty fun. I gave it to someone.

Sometimes a country song will sneak by me and I'll like it in spite of myself. An old song called "Too Many Crooks" by Unicorn is fairly country, slide guitar, bit of a twang to it, but I love it.

To me, red alert words in songs which may indicate the presence of country music are:
"Pick-up"
"Divorce"
"Wife"
"Toothless"
"USA"
"Hound"

And probably more. Those just popped into my head just now. They aren't automatically forbidden though, just evidence of a need to be wary. Neil Young sings a great song about a hound, and it's pretty twangy, but I like it anyway.

anne frasier said...

bill, motown. snap. i was trying to think where that song would fall. yeah.

mindy: i don't know who's in more trouble -- you or tribe. :D :D :D

but you do bring up an interesting question. would allman bros be country? would meat puppets be country? what about credence clearwater revival? what about the byrds? sweethearts of the rodeo, for instance. oh, i'm rambling.

what about a dusty springfield number? bobby gentry?

my head hurts

Bill Cameron said...

No no no. Motown is the Anti-Country! Motown is so cool even thinking about it gives you brain freeze.

CSNY is kinda in that country-rock category. The songs are so brilliant that I forgive the country. Neil Young is a god who walks among us. Stephen Stills is pretty damn cool too.

anne frasier said...

bill, i was thinking of hotel california! and also neil young. he does a lot of stuff that i would call country.

Bill Cameron said...

"Country Rock" exists to help intolerant people like me listen to good music too!

anne frasier said...

haha!

i've been listening to gram parsons all afternoon.

not that anybody asked, but it's definitely country.

not sure what impact that will have on a vampire book.

anne frasier said...

i wonder if anybody's ever written about a vampire cowboy?

anne frasier said...

okay, i gotta get back to work. i'll check back later and see if you guys got any of this solved.

Bill Cameron said...

There was an X-Files in which Luke Wilson was a vampire sheriff with a twangy accent. I think it was even set in Texas.

My word verification is rvolt.

Mindy Tarquini said...

Soooo Numa Numa won't do it?

The Lion Sleeps Tonight?

I know! Bird on a Wire!!!!

Son of a Preacherman?

Neil Diamond?

Amazing Grace?

Is Gospel country?

The only western thing I can find involves 'little dogies'...

whatever those are. Some kind of perogie maybe?

Are banjos involved?

Mindy Tarquini said...

Thing is, Bill...I thought Dixie had to do with Southern. Is Southern Country? Is it Western? If Southern is Western does Dixieland Jazz count? Sometimes that's twangy.

Screw it, I'll do Achy Breaky Heart.

Maybe.

Bill Cameron said...

Achy Breaky Heart?!

Aiieeeeeeee!!!

Daniel Hatadi said...

Reverse speech is about as silly, and fun, as numerology. I couldn't hear anything but a faint resemblance to the word 'satan'. I suppose all I have to do is BELIEVE. THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE.

anne frasier said...

Bill, OMG!! yes, i vaguely remember that episode!!! that was hilarious!!

mindy, son of a preacher man would be great!!! i vote for that one!
also achy breaky heart's good too.

daniel: i love reverse speech because it is so ridiculous! yes, you have to believe. in bullshit. :D

This stuff just freaks me out. But then, I'm easily freaked. haha!

angie said...

I think Mindy needs a sedative. Damn.

anne frasier said...

kelly, it is freaky! especially if you listen to it late at night!

angie, just as long as it doesn't have to be given rectally we'll all be fine.
