off to tuonela

i'm heading off to my hometown of Burlington, Iowa, where i'll be doing a booksigning on Saturday, immediately followed by some serious lounging around.

Burlington is a beautiful, dark town built on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Pale Immortal's Tuonela
IS Burlington.

I'm bringing my laptop, so I'll be watching you guys....

Billy Holiday -- Strange Fruit

some cool news:

Pale Immortal was a pick of the week on sarah weinman's
confessions of an idiosyncratic mind.

WTG on pick of the week! And have a safe, relaxing trip. It is well-deserved.

I love "Strange Fruit"... and my husband uses it in his history classes. He really likes to find pieces of culture like that, which have been obscured by timelines and rote memorization. Just really helps make the subjects relevant to his kids.

Okay, this might not be the place to ask, but... what is the perfect Billy Holiday album? Preferably with this song?

You don't think I bought into the "wish list" thing on my blog for no reason, did you? I gotta hint to my fambly! And shock of all shocks... the jazz is what I've been missing.

Someone help an anonymous girl out...

sam, yep, good ol' burlington. at one point the population was about 38,000. now it's about 22,000. and dropping. i won't be going to dubuque. :( love dubuque, though. a bunch of us gals sometimes meet there and stay at the hancock house. we're supposed to be writing, but it usually turns into... well, would it surprise you if i said a party? :D
